Primary Purpose:

  • Strengthen and improve students’ response to and benefit from school through cooperative home/school relations.  The Community Liaison encourages family/parental involvement in schools by providing ongoing, educational and outreach programs and activities. 
  • Support a partnership among schools, parents and the community to improve student academic  achievement. 
  • To build families capacity for becoming involved in improving their child’s academic achievement to  encourage families to be actively involved in their child’s education. 
  • Be a resource for parents/guardians to ensure that they understand academic programs and resources  available for their child. 
  • Coordinate programs regarding McKinney Vento Act.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School diploma or GED required

Experience working with parent and community groups

Experience and knowledge of Title I, Part A Parental Involvement Requirements and the McKinney Vento Act (Homeless Assistance Act), preferred.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

Ability to organize and coordinate district wide program

Ability to work with others in a cooperative and flexible manner 

Ability to maintain confidentiality 

Ability to multi-task 

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 

Ability to present information in one-on-one, small groups, and large group situations to students, parents  and district staff

Proficiency with standard functions within electronic applications such as MS Office (e.g., word processing, electronic spreadsheets) and e-mail

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Serve as liaison between school and home, establish trusting relationships and a welcoming environment, and serve as a point of contact for families.
  2. Work directly with the campus principals to support parent outreach efforts that will impact student achievement; assist with Title I, Part A Parental Involvement requirements.
  3. Ensure the goals, objectives and activities of the McKinney Vento Act and Texas State Law are met.
  4. Engage parents in ongoing coaching sessions for reading and math activities to take home and use with their children to foster positive early literacy and math skills.
  5. Coordinate and integrate school and community resources and refer school staff and parents to community resources where appropriate.
  6. Contribute to the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities. Develop and conduct parenting training and support groups. 
  7. Assist with identifying and providing guidance to help students that are experiencing emotional and academic weaknesses. 
  8. Assist teachers and staff in increasing family engagement through verbal contact and home visits.

 

Program Management: 

  1. Develop and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and staff. 
  2. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of services and make changes based on the findings. 
  3. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents 
  4. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. 
  5. Other duties as assigned

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: 

 

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting 

Motion: Frequent walking 

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds and over); may be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning of students with disabilities 

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular district wide travel to student homes Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; may work prolonged or irregular hours
